Where to Stay

Two neighborhoods, two very different vibes — both brilliant.

🏯 Higashiyama / Gion Stay here if you want to be in the heart of old Kyoto. Walking distance to most Day 1 spots. Tons of ryokan (traditional inns) options — try sleeping on a futon, wearing a yukata, and having a full kaiseki breakfast. It's the real deal. Best for: First-timers, romantics, anyone who wants maximum atmosphere.

🏙️ Kawaramachi / Shijo More central and lively. Great transport links to everywhere on the itinerary. Lots of hotels at every price point, plus you're steps from Nishiki Market and Pontocho. A better base if you like having restaurants and cafes right outside your door. Best for: Social travelers, budget-conscious planners, those who like urban energy.
